NC Summer Policy Institute

Equipping today’s students to lead the movements of tomorrow

Read the 2023 Summer Policy Institute Impact Report

In our 2023 Impact report, we celebrate six years of the NCSPI program and five cohorts of leaders that have created a ripple effect of change throughout our networks and beyond.

The North Carolina Summer Policy Institute (NCSPI) brings together students from across the state to participate in a multi-day exploration of North Carolina’s top policy issues through a combination of seminars, panel discussions, and workshops.

During this engaging experience, the students will gain a broader understanding of the tools needed to contribute to the policy process.

Through networking with their peers, local policy experts, and state officials, we aim for NCSPI to be the cornerstone in preparing students to become North Carolina’s future movement makers.

This year, it will take place virtually Monday, Aug. 1, through Friday, Aug. 5. There will be an in-person orientation in Raleigh in late June or early July.

Tuition is free!

The cost of the Institute has been generously covered by funders who want everyone to be able to take advantage of this opportunity!

What Summer Policy Institute alumni have to say

“This was an excellent experience. I learned a great deal from the attendees, as well as the staff and speakers. My knowledge base about policy was expanded, as well as a renewed fervor to see social change. I am better for having attended NCSPI. I am grateful to have been a part of such a great assortment of people.”

Leonardo Wesley

Fayetteville State

“I loved SPI! Honestly, I cannot recall ever having learned as much in four days as I did during SPI! I think that SPI helped me gain a much stronger feel for what full-time policy and advocacy work looks like, particularly at the state level, and I hope to draw on this understanding as I begin to consider how I can best promote just policies during my career and in the future.”

Avra Janz

University of North Carolina

“I really enjoyed it!

I loved meeting people from across the state with different experiences and learning more about the legislative process.”
